Make sure the governor weights can move easily Oil the ignitor sparingly - don't soak it! Turn down grease cups until slight resistance is felt, then turn 1 turn down. Cam shaft, governor assembly, exhaust pushrod and rocker, valve stems, anything that moves needs a few drops of oil. Put a couple of drops of oil on the piston too. In that case, leaving the oiler on will take care of oiling the wrist pin. Not all the early engines exposed that hole. The hole is access to the wrist pin and bearing. If there is a hole in the top of the piston, exposed, put several drops of oil in that hole. Pre-start procedure: Set the oiler on top of the cylinder for 6 to 8 drips/minute, and leave it on.
Low tension ignition does not use a condenser! They usually get changed out every year, and the used batteries usualy have a lot of life left in them. If you have a company near you that maintains emergency lights for businesses, you might be able to buy used batteries in bulk cheap. A low amp charger works best too - not more than 10% of battery amp rating for charge ampereage. Of course, a small lawn mower or motorcycle lead acid battery will work too.

D cells don't have the capacity or amps to work on a full sized engine. Originally dry cells (2" OD x 6" tall x4 = 6 volts)were used, stacked in series, but they are now way to expensive if you try and stay lke original, even if you could find them. Lasts for a weekend, and won't spill acid if knocked over. i use a 12 volt 10 amp sealed emergency light battery. Nice find!Īs for battery, you can use either 6 or 12 volt batteries. It is a nice looking engine, and you do not see the battery and coil engines as much as the Tripolar powered engines. The engine pictured looks similar to later engines. It did not look like the engine pictured - totally different hopper. I had an early 1915 Hercules and it had a squared hopper with a pressed in inner lip. it is low tension, using only a low voltage primary coil - no high tension or spark plug The Webster Tripolar mag was an option on the early engines. This Model E engine (serial #239840) was made by the Hercules Gas Engine Company in Evansville, Indiana, probably around 1921.
